The metal scenes in The Philippines, in my opinon at least, lives in the shadows from the more internationally exposed metal scenes in Indonesia, that has gotten some seriously and absolutely well deserved media attention in international metal media the past years.
That being said, The Philippines has a great metal scene that is very much alive, packed with kickass bands across the provinces and of course in the epicenter of it all, Manila. And of course Manila is the host of the country´s biggest (perhaps the only) international metal festival – Pulp Summerslam! The Pulp guys have been doing this festival since 99 ´and they even make a monthly magazine called…you guessed it – PULP MAGAZINE.
This year´s Pulp Summerslam Festival is absolutely just as big as, maybe even bigger than, Indonesias counterpart Hammersonic, with some absolutely top international metal acts on the bill. Here is the lineup for this years PULP SUMMERSLAM FESTIVAL:
LACUNA COIL, BELPHEGOR, VEIL OF MAYA, WE ARE HARLOT, PROTEST THE HERO, I KILLED THE PROM QUEEN, ACT OF DEFIANCE, VOLUMES, GREYHOUNDZ, SLAPSHOCK, RAZORBACK, KJWAN, WILABALIW.
PULP SUMMERSAM is famous for it´s passionate, crazy and freaky fans, showing up every year in the wildest costumes and freaky outfits making this event a feast not only for the ears. I was there back in 2008 and it sure was an experience out of the ordinary to see all these freaky outfits and funny costumes – everything from Batman in a g-string to tribal-ish war-painted metal heads. You could say that PULP is a little bit like Obscene Extreme in Czech Rep in terms of “freaky friendly” but without the grindcore theme.
The Metal Rebel will for the first time ever be represented in The Philippines with local TMR Crew and we are so proud and happy that PULP is our Filipino debut, and we aim to report much more from the filipino metal scenes in the future. So get your sh*t together, buy your tickets and go to Manila for this super spectacular festival, it really is something you´ll never forget! Stay tuned for our report from PULP Summerslam!
